Project SMILE

SMILE Program for underprivileged children

The Development Association for Integrated Activity (DAIA) is a non-profit organization that was founded   in   2002.   They   aim   to   educate,   empower   and   embrace   communities   in   low   socio-economic areas in Tuticorin and Kovilpatti and turn them into healthy, thriving, self-sufficient ones. SMILE is a program that aims to provide soft toys and picture books to sick and disadvantaged kids in hospitals and bring a smile to their face.  I  have been volunteering at  the  DAIA  for the SMILE project since 2023. I opted for this initiative through the TATA Pro Engage program, a CSR initiative from the TATA group.

  • Worked on creating a  promotional  flyer and campaign video. When I found out about the opportunity to volunteer for the DAIA and make promotional flyers, I was extremely excited as I was able to do something impactful and something I loved as well. Although I had made various videos and posters for my friends and family already, making one for a professional organization was quite different as it had to fit the DAIA’s company image and fulfill their requirements. In the end, while doing something beneficial for others, I also enjoyed the process.

  • Engaged with my contacts for funds mobilisation through various channels.

  • I organized a community fund collection by opting to sell some of my paintings.

  • Around 400 children benefited from this initiative.

  • Awarded ProEngage certificate from TATA Group Chairman.

  • Received Certificate of Appreciation for being the youngest sponsor for DAIA.

Working on this project with the DAIA was a great experience for me as I got to learn a lot about their work from the Executive Director Ms. Hilda John herself. I was also able to meet staff  members of the DAIA and other volunteers; their passion and altruism was truly inspiring. While having the opportunity to design something, a job I really enjoy, I also learnt a lot about the work of the DAIA and the impact they have on the communities. Meeting some of the kids from the tuition centers they run  motivated   me to try to help these communities  more  by spreading awareness of the DAIA and their work.
